I find that when there are certain manipluatives, etc on their desks when they walk into the room there is an instant curiosity..."What is this?" What are we doing?" for science, I brought in different object and placed two objects on each desk. They were REALLY random objects from around the house. One student walks in and says immediately, "Why is there a race car and tennis ball on my desk?" Other students followed suit. I did not answer their questions directly. Instead, I asked them why they thought they were there. Then I reminded them that it was time for science, "Now why do you think they are there?" There were some pretty interesting responses, even science focused ones such as, "Are we comparing their properties?" LOVE IT!!! We wound up discussing their properties and then comparing them using the balances (the actual plan for the period.) I feel like it led them to be more excited about the class that day and eager to talk and share their learning experiences. At the end of the period a student asked if we could compare liquids and gasses too... guess what the next day's plan was? :)

Robyn, what a great idea! I would love to try hooking my students into a science lesson in a similar way that you did! How great that you didn't tell your students why they had random objects on their desk. Instead by reminding them of the subject they were going to work on and inviting them to figure it out you further engaged them in the lesson!

In 2016 I want to collaborate more with the literacy staff and provide them with PD and resources that are going to better help them engage their students. I want all staff and students to be excited about reading and writing. I would love the opportunity to allow teachers to share more of what they are doing in their engaged classrooms, either during GLM's or giving them the opportunity to observe or model in their own classrooms and in their colleagues classrooms. I also would like to begin the conversations necessary for grade level articulation not only within grade levels but across grade levels as well. I am excited about 2016 and Im looking forward to discovering these uncharted territories with you all!

In 2016 I want to provide my students more opportunities to engage in interactive writing in the classroom! Lori came in and modeled an interactive writing lesson in our classroom and the children loved it! Watching Lori gave me many new ideas for interactive writing opportunities in our classroom and I can't wait to try them!

In PE I didn't use Turn and Talk... I'm giving an attempt to implement the turn and talk and at times incorporate it into a movement based activity.

Good Morning Mateys! Happy Snow Day. In follow-up to our staff meeting discussion, I'm hopeful that we will start to see our staff using the blog to share a Professional Resolution, thoughts about the engagement strategies we viewed and/or hooks they have tried from Burgess' book. Let's Dive In!

I want to keep pushing and encouraging the courage to be independent writers. I want them to ask themselves the why questions.

Good morning! I want to continue to share my love of writing with my class. We are incorporating strategies to add interest to their writing by lengthening their such as using descriptive language. We also have been working on using "because...." to add to the sophistication of their work.

Sometimes the kids don't jump eagerly aboard the my ship, even though I know it's going somewhere fun and enriching. I feel so limited on time that I tend to pressure them into discussion or analysis. I need to go back to basics and trick them into learning by beginning lessons with movement or games that wake them up and make them feel glad they came to music class. More inductive, less didactic -- even though I didn't really think I was that didactic to begin with. I attended a retreat for children's choir directors last weekend, and one session was devoted to this very topic, so I'm primed...

Happy Snow Day everyone! So I decided to try the whole class stand up activity to start a word study lesson the other day (I apologize for not remembering the actual name of this activity). The kids loved it. Each child had to give me a word that ended in "-ng" or "-ck" before they could sit down. I couldn't believe how many quick responses I got as opposed to the cycle before when the participation was not so "eager." It was a fun way to get everyone involved and the rest of the lesson went much better. Also, during math we started using silent signals on Friday. They are very excited about them. We decided on a "hang loose" signal to represent "I agree" since we have the Hawaiian theme in the classroom. Some of the students caught on right away and some are still needing to be reminded to use their signals. A lot of my students also love the new I know the answer signal (thumbs up at their chest level). We discussed how it will make all students feel better so that our arms don't hurt from raising them and also we won't feel rushed to raise our hands because we see that everyone else has an answer. I got a lot of smiles and head nods from my slower answering students who agreed they liked this new method. I really appreciated learning these new techniques at our meeting and look forward to using more.
