Recognizing that we all have lots going on right now... Let’s try, over the course of the next cycle, to incorporate Burgess’ Kinesthetic Hook idea into one of our lessons.

I have always found that movement works. For me and the students.

Getting up and moving allows students opportunities to experience their learning! During the previous reading unit, the students spent time getting to know the characters in their book by paying attention to how the characters behaved, how they spoke and how others reacted to them. By getting up out of our seats and acting out scenes pretending to be the character, students were able to become their characters and feel what they characters felt. This helped them have deeper ideas about who the characters really were as well as what motivated them to act in certain ways.

I love the idea behind this chapter. What a great way to "read" Henry "Bpx" Brown. I can guarantee that class will never forget that book! I love the quote, "It's not necessarily about putting students in the box: it's about thinking outside of the box for creative ideas". Maybe at one of our grade level meetings we can share ways we "thought out of the box" during a read aloud, close read or interactive read aloud!
